Oleanders grow well in hot regions, where it is often a favorite landscape shrub, and for good reason: These evergreen shrubs with their brilliant flowers are draught-tolerant and can be planted in poor quality soil.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Oleander shrubs can grow well in warm to hot climates. they can also be planted in cold and foggy areas, but they will grown more slowly.
Step2
Plant your oleander shrubs in any type of soil, with any level of light exposure. Ideally, they do best in full sun, planted in soil that is moist and well-drained. Oleandar shrubs thrive when peat moss has been added to soil
Step3
Water lightly to moderately. Regular watering is not neccesary.
Step4
Watch for signs of bacterial infestation (see below).
Step5
Prune only to direct growth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Oleanders are now facing a serious threat from a bacteria-spreading insect. After being exposed to the bacteria, the oleander bush quickly shows droopy leaves, which turn brown just before the plant dies.
  • If your oleander shows signs of the disease (droopy leaves), there is no cure, but cutting away the parts of the plant that have been exposed to the bacteria slows the spread of the disease. When cutting out diseased areas, sterilze your tool between cuts.
  • All parts of the oleander (leaves, branches and flowers) are poisonous.
  • Keep children from eating any part of plant.
  • Keep prunings away from animal feed.
  • Do not burn plant. The smoke can cause severe irritation to mucus membranes.
