Make a cloud in a bottle to show kids how water vapor creates a cloud. With adult supervision, kids can perform this experiment using only a 2-liter bottle, some warm water and a match. It's fun to learn hands-on!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Water
  • Clear plastic bottle
  • Matches
  1. Step 1

Pour some hot water into a 2-liter bottle. Put about 2 inches of water in.

  2. Step 2

Blow into the bottle. Place your mouth over the bottle opening and blow to make sure the bottle is fully expanded.

  3. Step 3

Seal the bottle tightly with the cap.

  4. Step 4

Shake the bottle vigorously for one minute.

  5. Step 5

Light a match. Let it burn for two seconds.

  6. Step 6

Drop the match into the bottle. Unscrew the lid, drop the burning match in and screw the bottle shut again quickly.

  7. Step 7

Place the bottle on its side. Lay it on some black paper so you can see.

  8. Step 8

Push down on the bottle for 10 seconds. Push hard, so the bottle compresses.

  9. Step 9

Release. Look into the bottle. If a cloud has not formed, push again and release.

  10. Step 10

Open the bottle. Once the cloud has formed, open the bottle to release the cloud. Squeeze the bottle a little bit to coax your fluffy friend into the atmosphere.

Tips & Warnings
  • Clear plastic bottles work the best.
  • Get a strong bottle so it won't burst or break when you push on it.
  • Always have parental supervision while using matches.
