Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Non-airtight container
  1. Step 1

Wash the carrots in cool water. This removes any dirt and sand that may still be clinging to them. Be careful not to damage the skin, since it helps to retain taste and moisture.

  2. Step 2

Remove the greens by twisting or cutting them as soon as possible. As long as they are attached, they will draw moisture and flavor from the carrot root.

  3. Step 3

Leave some moisture on the carrots after washing. It will help the skin retain its elasticity and lock in flavor and vitamins.

  4. Step 4

Place the carrots in a bag or container that is not airtight. Like most vegetables, carrots need to “breathe” in storage.

  5. Step 5

Keep some space between the carrots in their container. Allow room for their skins to do their jobs. Carrots that are packed too closely together will become rubbery.

  6. Step 6

Place the carrots in the vegetable crisper of your refrigerator. These compartments are designed specifically to provide ventilation and prolong the shelf lives of vegetables.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add carrot greens to a salad. The greens are nutritious and tasty as long as they are fresh.
  • Unlike most vegetables, cooking carrots actually enhances your body’s ability to absorb the vitamins and nutrients that they contain.
  • If you leave the carrots in their original bag and don't wash or properly store them, the will quickly lose their freshness and nutritional value.
