How to Find Linux Drivers

The Linux system uses different types of drivers to run its programs and software. Follow the instructions below to find a Linux driver.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer

Step1
Determine which driver you need by matching it to the hardware you are installing. For example, if you put a sound card in your machine, you will need a driver for that specific card.
Step2
Search for the drivers on the Internet using a search engine like Google. Type in the model number and version of the hardware you are installing and include the words “Linux drivers.” Most drivers are available free on the Internet.
Step3
Download only the latest version of the driver. Drivers update frequently and you need the latest version for your hardware to work properly.
Step4
Download and install your driver. Create a folder for the driver and download the driver into that folder. When the download finishes, install the driver by following the steps in the driver’s installation program.
Step5
Restart your computer and test the driver to make sure it works. If the driver doesn't respond, make sure you have the correct model number and version of the hardware. Do a second search to find another version of the driver.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check that there isn’t a disk with the driver you need included in the hardware package.
  • Make sure you have the right Linux drivers before you download and install them.
  • Don’t give up too quickly. You can find a driver for almost everything on the Internet but it may take some searching.
