How to Enable Auto Login in Windows XP

Microsoft Windows XP is user friendly, but it can be slow booting up because of the welcome screen. You can turn off the screen and let your computer boot without requiring a password. Follow the instructions below to enable auto login in Windows XP.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Windows XP
  1. Step 1

    Turn on your computer and log in. Let your computer initialize before you proceed to the next step.

  2. Step 2

    Click the "Start" menu at the bottom of you screen with your mouse. In the "Start" menu, click the "Control Panel" link to open the control panel.

  3. Step 3

    In the control panel, click the "User Accounts" icon to open the user settings. Now click on “Change the way users log on or off.”

  4. Step 4

    Uncheck the “Use the Welcome screen” box and press the "Apply Options" button located at the bottom of the User Accounts window. Close the User Accounts window and restart your computer.

  5. Step 5

    Your computer will now boot up without bringing up the Welcome screen or asking for a password.

Tips & Warnings
  • Deactivating the Welcome screen represents a security risk since it allows others to access your computer without a password.
