How to Enable Auto Login in Any Windows Operating System

Having a password on your home computer can be a nuisance, especially if the computer is used by more than one person in the same household. Follow the instructions below to enable auto login in any Windows operating system.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with a Windows Operating System
  1. Step 1

    Turn on your computer. Wait for all of your programs to initialize completely.

  2. Step 2

    Click the "Start" button on the bottom of your screen to open the Start menu. Windows XP users must click on the "Control Panel" button. For older Windows operating systems, you must click on "Settings," and then "Control Panel."

  3. Step 3

    Windows XP users must click on "User Settings" on their control panels. For those of you using older Windows operating systems, click on "Users and Passwords" on the control panel.

  4. Step 4

    Windows XP users should click on "Change the way users log on or off" button. If you are using other Windows systems, click on "Users and Passwords."

  5. Step 5

    Windows XP users should uncheck the "Use the Welcome screen" option in the User Accounts window, and then click on the "Apply Options" button. For older Windows systems, click on the "Users" tab in the User Accounts window and uncheck "users must enter a user name and a password to use this computer."

  6. Step 6

    Close the User Account windows and restart your computer. You will now be able to log in without a password.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're prompted for a password after you have turned on auto login, go through the steps above again and make sure you push the "Apply Options" button in Step 5.
  • Turn your password back on if you suspect a security risk.
  • Remember that anyone can log on to your computer if you turn off your password protection.
