Finding a great vacation rental is as easy as perusing popular Web sites like Craigslist and clicking your mouse. Here's how to do it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to the Craigslist Web site (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Choose your destination from the location navigation menu on the right side of the page.

  3. Step 3

Select "Vacation Rentals" under the "Housing" menu at the top of the page. A page containing a list of rentals will appear. You can narrow your search by price range and other variables by filling in the boxes at the top of the page. You can also specify that you only want to see ads with images. Some ads will offer you virtual tours of a home.

  4. Step 4

Peruse the list. When you see something appealing, click the link, which should bring you to a detailed posting describing the house.

  5. Step 5

To reach the landlord, send an email through the hyperlink above the posting. Or call the landlord if a phone number is listed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some people may leave out important information such as the fact that the house is located in a bad or unattractive neighborhood. Do your own research as well.

on 8/23/2009 List at ReserveMyHome.com where bookings and verified vacation rental listings are coming on strong. If you are a property manager or independent vacation homeowner list your vacation rentals for free. There is a small commission charged at the time of booking but well worth the advertising and exposure. http://www.reservemyhome.com

on 2/22/2009 I have to agree with tenantwiz. I am a vacation home broker and do everything possible to let people know that I am legitimate. I have a website with only select properties that I know and have visited personally. I email people and give them a live phone number to call or I have them email me with their number and I will call them. I use my VOIP phone, so I can take my laptop anywhere and talk with people while I am on the road. I do have a toll free number, but that is our reservation desk, I like talking to my customers personally and assisting them with their vacation plans. Unfortunately, dishonest people ruin it for the honest businesses like mine and many others that are on Craigslist. I personally approve all of the properties we list and if I get more than 3 complaints about the same item or a pattern, we discontinue our relationship with them.

on 8/29/2007 I think that finding a rental on craigslist is a bit more complex then this. It's important to let the readers know that weeding through some of the ads on craigslist can be a bit daunting. Recently there have been several scams that have surfaced with vacation rentals so it's important to be aware of this. Readers who are serious about renting a vacation rental property should visit sites like vrbo.com and homeaway.com and possibly even ownerdirect.com. These are professional hand-indexed directories of verified vacation rental properties throughout the world.
