An allergic reaction to a bee sting or insect bite could prove life threatening if you are not prepared to deal with it. Timely use of an EpiPen can keep you out of danger with just a quick jab in the leg, followed by a visit to the doctor. Here's how.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Know the signs of an allergic reaction. These can include swelling of the throat and tightness in the chest, the appearance of a rash or hives and itching.

  2. Step 2

Uncap the EpiPen and remove it from the protective case.

  3. Step 3

Hold the EpiPen in your dominant hand, with your thumb toward the end and away from the black tip. Do not actually place your thumb over the end. Remove the gray safety release.

  4. Step 4

Jab the EpiPen into your thigh at a 90 degree angle. The pen is designed to work through clothing.

  5. Step 5

Hold the pen in place for 10 seconds.

  6. Step 6

Remove the pen carefully and massage the area for another 10 seconds.

  7. Step 7

Replace the EpiPen in the protective case, needle first. You should see the red plunger through the pen, indicating that it has injected.

  8. Step 8

Go to the emergency room immediately, and take your used EpiPen with you. Let your doctor dispose of it.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don't make it to the emergency room fast enough, you may need a second EpiPen injection. Always carry at least 2.
