A slipped reef knot is tied similarly to a regular reef knot except that you leave a byte (a loop) on one end. The loop makes it easy to untie a tight knot.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Take the 2 ends of your rope, 1 in each hand.

  2. Step 2

On one end, create a loop in the end (a byte) to tie with (say this is the right hand side).

  3. Step 3

Take the left hand side of your rope and place it over the right hand side with the loop and pull the left hand rope under.

  4. Step 4

Take the right hand loop and place it over the left side (which now has the loop) and pull under.

  5. Step 5

Tighten the knot--you should have a loop on one end.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you tie the knot, say this to yourself (or out loud)--left over right and under, right over left and under. This helps you remember the correct order to tie the ends.
