How to Build a TV Cabinet
If you know a bit about woodworking and want to save yourself some money, you can build your own TV cabinet fairly easily. This project is not for beginners, but you don't have to be an expert carpenter to make a beautiful piece for your living room, family, bedroom or other area of the house. Does this Spark an idea?

- Dimensions of your TV and the cabinet
- Paint or stain

Measure up the TV that you want to store in the cabinet.

Figure out the dimensions of your TV cabinet. The cabinet should be the width and depth of your television plus about 5 inches and should be of an appropriate height, depending on if you want the TV to sit on top of the cabinet or inside on a shelf.

Figure out how much wood you will need. At the very least, you will need two pieces that is width by height, two pieces that are width by depth, two pieces that are depth by height, one additional piece for each shelf, and additional wood for edging, support and legs.

Purchase wood at a lumberyard.

Purchase other supplies like paint or stain, hardware, and nails or screws.

Measure and cut each piece of wood so that you have a top, bottom and back. If you want to create a shelf, cut out that piece as well. You will also need a support piece if you choose a shelf to hold a large TV. This should be the depth by the height of the shelf from the base.

Cut a hole in the back of the cabinet for cords to run to your TV.

Attach shelf to the back of the TV cabinet and attach the support piece.

Attach sides, top and bottom.

Cut an additional piece the same size as the back. This will serve as the door and you can either keep it as one piece or cut it in half.

Attach door or doors using hinges.

Attach legs to the base of the cabinet.

Attach edging to create a stop for the door or doors. You can use hardware to keep the doors latched.

Attach doorknobs.

Paint or stain the wood to match your personal preferences.

Purchase plans for the cabinet if you don't want to design one on your own or it you want a more elegant or complicated design.
Always make sure your cabinet is fully supported if you own a larger TV.
Use protective clothing when using power tools.
