How to Customize Your Boat for Proper Weight Distribution

Most boats, whether they are sailboats or powerboats, operate best when the hull is at a particular angle. When the hull of a boat is at the right angle, the boat rides on a plane of water. This position is where the hull is most efficient. If the boat rides too low or forward in the water, it will push a bow of water. If it rides too far back, control is compromised. You can shift weight around the boat to help alleviate improper weight distribution, or you can install trim tabs on your power boat, which are the best way to adjust for changing weight distribution. On a sail boat that rides on a plane, because they tend to run very light anyway, your best bet is to simply shift people and objects around to achieve better weight distribution.

Things You'll Need:

  • Installation tools according to your kit requirements
  • Trim angle indicator
  • A boat
  • Trim tab installation kit
  1. Step 1

Understand what trim tabs are. Trim tabs are essentially horizontal rudders that are analogous to the ailerons on the wings of an airplane. They are installed on both sides of the hull and the redirect water flow, sort of like horizontally mounted rudders. They can allow you to correct for all kinds of ride height issues, including minor listing, too much weight or weight improperly distributed.

  2. Step 2

Decide whether you want electronically or hydraulically controlled trim tabs. Electric trim tabs typically cost less but they tend not to last as long. Hydraulically controlled tabs, because the motor controlling the actuators is inside the boat, tend to have a much longer life.

  3. Step 3

Order your kit. Trim tabs are rather expensive, but they offer an excellent degree of control over your boat, especially when you want to overcome issues of weight distribution. You can order trim tabs from a variety of sources online. Just Google “Trim Tabs” to find many retailers.

  4. Step 4

Decide if you want to install the tabs yourself or if you want to have a professional install them. If you are a competent boat mechanic, you may be able to undertake this task yourself. However, anytime you are drilling holes into the bottom of your boat, you should stop and think hard about it.

  5. Step 5

Consider installing a trim angle indicator. This simple to install piece of equipment will help you find the ideal trim angle, and also reduce the learning curve of the trim tabs. You may also wish to consider installing an electronic indicator control, which takes the place of a lever.

  6. Step 6

Install the control module. On most kits, this will be a simple lever, although some kits will have a digital system in place.

Tips & Warnings
  • Installing the trim tabs yourself is a very complicated procedure that will vary depending on the make and model.
  • Remember that the weight distribution of your boat will change as you burn off fuel. Move people or the load around to maintain proper weight distribution of the boat.
  • If you are installing your own trim tabs, remember that you are drilling holes in the bottom of your boat. Consider and then reconsider your actions.
  • Practice, practice, practice. It takes a skilled hand to use trim tabs and to know when you are on a proper plane.
