How to Sell a Boat on eBay

Selling a boat on eBay can be very easy, since it puts you in touch with many more potential buyers than you’ll find in the local newspaper. The eBay site is very user-friendly, so even if you don't have much computer knowledge, you won’t have much trouble listing your boat.

• An eBay account

Prepare Your Boat for Sale

1. Wash your boat and clean the interior.
2. Make sure your boat is safe and ready to use. If it needs repairs--make them, or you will have to note this when you are trying to sell it.
3. Put a fresh coat of pain on your boat. This will attract more buyers.
4. Take pictures of your boat. Try to get the boat from every angle. At least three to five pictures are recommended.
5. Upload your pictures onto your computer from your digital camera or scan the prints.

Sign up for an eBay Account

6. Click on "Register" at the top of any eBay page.
7. Fill in your name and personal information to register.
8. Check your email. You should have received a confirmation email with a link.
9. Click the link to sign back into eBay using your new username and password.

List Your Boat for Sale

10. Click on the “Sell” button at the top of the homepage.
11. Click on "List using the original Sell Your Item form."
12. Sign in if you are prompted.
13. Click the "Sell your Item" button.
14. Create a seller's profile by registering a credit card or verify your ID.
15. Choose a title or subject for your ad. This will most likely be the make and model of your boat.
16. Choose at least one category in which to list your boat.
17. Add pictures, a description and other information about your boat.
18. Choose a starting price, payment method, length of auction and shipping charges.
19. Click "Save and Continue."
20. Preview your ad and make changes or additions if you need to.
21. Pay the eBay listing fee.
22. Submit your boat for auction.

Finalize the Sale

23. Contact the buyer when the auction ends.
24. Agree on the payment method and shipping date or pick up date.
25. Hand over your boat to its new owner.

Tips & Warnings

• You can list a reserve price if you don't want to sell your boat for less than a certain amount of money.
• The more information you list about your boat, the more bidders you’ll get and the higher people will bid.
• Always wait for payments to clear before giving your item to the buyer.
