How to Replace an Existing Ceiling Fixture With a Cover Plate

You've just added gorgeous new track lighting. Now what do you do with your old ceiling light fixture? Just disconnect it and cap it off! Does this Spark an idea?

  • Screws
  • Cover plate
  • Insulated screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

      Purchase a decorative fixture cover or plate at a home goods store or hardware store.

      Turn off power to the light at the source, either the circuit breaker or the fuse. Turning off the light switch is not enough.

      Remove the old light fixture.

      Disconnect the wires from the electrical box to the light fixture.

    • 5

      Cap each wire end individually with a wire nut.

      Tuck the capped wires back into the electrical box.

      Install the cover plate following the manufacturer instructions.

Tips & Warnings

  • For added safety, you can tape the capped wires inside the box so that they don't touch.

  • Always turn off power to the circuits on which you are working at the source. Don't rely on turning off the switch.
