How to Determine the Difference Between Palmtherapy and Reflexology

Rate: (1 Ratings)

Palmtherapy and reflexology are both holistic treatments, but they differ in techniques and applications. Palmtherapy concentrates on emotional characteristics by stimulating the palms. Reflexology focuses more on physical well-being (like relieving back pain and tension) and, on a smaller scale, the mental issues of the patient by hand and foot massaging. Follow these steps to learn more about their differences.

Determine the Methods of Palmtherapy

Step1
Understand Palmtherapy by visiting its official Web site (see resources below). The primary difference between Palmtherapy and reflexology is that a palmist focuses on the lines and contours of the hands to relieve emotional feelings, while a reflexologist uses hand or foot massage to relieve physical pain.
Step2
Read Palmtherapy founder Moshe Zwang's book, "The Ultimate Prophecy: Book One," which is available at the online store of the Palmtherapy Web site. It explains the history of Palmtherapy.
Step3
Learn Palmtherapy methods. Most techniques (used to target energy pathways of various characteristics of the personality and brain activities) are done by physical hand stimulation and some devices. Reflexology treatments rely more on tools and stretching in addition to massage techniques.

Know the Difference Between Reflexology and Palmtherapy

Step1
Study the practice of reflexology by reading Barbara and Kevin Kunz's book, "Hand Reflexology," which you can buy online (see resources below). You'll find this method dates back much farther than Palmtherapy.
Step2
Determine the difference between how reflexology and Palmtherapy uses the hand. Reflexology techniques correlate with sections of the body. For example, "close to the fingers" relates to healing the upper back. In Palmtherapy, areas of the palms indicate sections of the brain and emotions.
Step3
Learn about their tools and routines. Reflexology exercises include working with small balls and rollers, performing stretching (for carpel tunnel syndrome) as well as squeezing and pulling methods. Palmtherapy relies on touch and non-touch, stimulation and some other tools.
Step4
Investigate credentials for each practice. Both areas have certification boards; but no official license is required. Finding a reflexologist will be easier, since massage therapists often have it as an additional skill.

Tips & Warnings

  • Reflexology is performed on either the hands or the feet. Palmtherapy is performed only on the hands.
  • Both disciplines are moderate in price range, but physical ailments might require ongoing therapy.
  • Palmtherapy and reflexology are not listed as official medical treatments for severe depression or heart disease. If you have severe feelings of hopelessness or high blood pressure, consult a psychologist or medical doctor.
  • Before you start any alternative medical technique, be aware that many have not been scientifically evaluated. Often, only limited information is available about their safety and effectiveness. Each state and each discipline has its own rules about how alternative medicine practitioners can be professionally licensed. If you decide to visit one, choose one licensed by a recognized national organization. Consult your primary health care provider about your decision first. Keep your doctor informed about the alternative medical technique you undertake.
