Hypnotherapy is therapy that concerns itself with the subconscious mind. In this approach, hypnosis is used to direct the subconscious toward certain goals. Many believe these techniques can be used to address a wide range of conditions, from anxiety to obesity. Hypnotherapy has also been used with some reported success to help those who wish to quit smoking.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access to research hypnotherapists
  1. Step 1

Understand how hypnotherapy works. When used to help people who wish to quit smoking, hypnotherapy addresses two areas. First, it aims to reduce stress and offer tools to use to handle stressful situations. Second, it seeks to alter attitudes and beliefs held about smoking on a core level, thus helping the smoker to relinquish his addiction.

  2. Step 2

Get experienced help. Find a hypnotherapist experienced in working with smokers to help them break the addiction. Locate qualified hypnotherapists in your region by visiting the National Board for Certified Clinical Hypnotherapists Web site (see Resources below).

  3. Step 3

Consider self-hypnosis. In self-hypnosis, you hypnotize yourself by reading a hypnosis script aloud and making a recording of it. By listening to this recording, you're able to send yourself into a hypnotic trance. This approach allows you to save money relative to traditional hypnotherapy. It also allows you to place your treatment squarely in your own hands. Learn more about self-hypnosis by purchasing "Self Hypnosis For A Better Life" by Bill Hewitt (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • Hypnotherapy can get expensive. Many conditions can be treated in as little as 3 sessions. However, for more pronounced results, additional sessions are recommended.
  • Hypnotherapy CDs are often recommended to support hypnotherapy treatment. These are moderately priced, and are available in hypnotherapy offices or online.
  • If suffering from severe symptoms like seizures, don't attempt to treat your condition with hypnotherapy. Your condition could be life-threatening, so get help from a doctor.
  • Before you start any alternative medical technique, be aware that many have not been scientifically evaluated. Often, only limited information is available about their safety and effectiveness. Each state and each discipline has its own rules about how alternative medicine practitioners can be professionally licensed. If you decide to visit one, choose one licensed by a recognized national organization. Consult your primary health care provider about your decision first. Keep your doctor informed about the alternative medical technique you undertake.

on 3/18/2008 I was a pack and a half a day smoker and quit smoking in one 30-minute treatment with laser therapy. I went to a company called Freedom Laser Therapy that provides a pain free low-level laser procedure which helps alleviate nicotine withdrawal symptoms. The staff at Freedom Laser Therapy is dedicated and passionate about helping smokers end their nicotine addiction.

I would really recommend laser therapy to help you quit smoking. Go to their locations page to find a Freedom Laser Therapy clinic or a local quit smoking laser therapy practionioner in your area. http://www.freedomlasertherapy.com
