Acupuncture has been used in Oriental medicine for centuries. Those who study it believe that energy travels through the body in pathways known as meridians. When a pathway is blocked, illness is the result. Acupuncture aims to clear these pathways and restore health via the insertion of thin needles in various parts of the body. Acupuncture is best performed by trained acupuncturists.

    Choose an Acupuncturist

  1. Step 1

Consider your budget. Take a look at your finances and figure out how much you are able to spend on this kind of treatment.

  2. Step 2

Examine credentials. Most states require that acupuncturists obtain licenses to provide care. Go online to see what the laws are in your state so you can know what kind of credentials to expect of your practitioner (see Resources below).

  3. Step 3

Consider experience. Generally speaking, a veteran is preferable to a newbie. If you're trying to choose an acupuncturist, ask him or her how long he or she has been in practice.

  4. Step 4

Learn more about acupuncture and how to choose an acupuncturist by picking up a copy of "Acupuncture for Everyone: What It Is, Why It Works, and How It Can Help You" by Dr. Ruth Kidson.

  5. Step 5

Find an acupuncturist in your area by visiting directories online (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • The cost of acupuncture therapy varies in cost from moderate to expensive. The price will depend on the education of the practitioner, his or her experience and the city in which he or she is based.
  • Medicare and Medicaid don't cover acupuncture, but some benefit packages do. Be sure to contact your carrier to see if this kind of therapy is covered by your health plan.
  • If you are suffering from severe symptoms--such as a temperature of over 101 degrees F that shows no sign of abating after a few hours--don't attempt to treat your condition with acupuncture. Instead, seek the care of a physician.
  • Before you start any alternative medical technique, be aware that many have not been scientifically evaluated. Often, only limited information is available about their safety and effectiveness. Each state and each discipline has its own rules about how alternative medicine practitioners can be professionally licensed. If you decide to visit one, choose one licensed by a recognized national organization. Consult your primary health care provider about your decision first. Keep your doctor informed about the alternative medical technique you undertake.
