Once you've won an eBay auction or bought an item from a seller at a fixed price, you must pay for that item. Most sellers will not ship the item to you until you have made payment and that payment has cleared. The methods of payment accepted vary from seller to seller, so you may find one that takes personal checks while another one does not. The majority of sellers, however, do have more than one payment method they will accept. You will find a list of the accepted payment methods on the listing page of the auction.

Things You'll Need:

  • Valid eBay membership
  • Internet access
  • Computer
  • Money with which to pay for your item

Make Sure Your Seller Gets Paid

  1. Step 1

Head to eBay and log in (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Read the fine print. It is a good idea to take note of the seller's accepted methods of payment on the auction listing. Then, you can have a payment method in mind for when you've (hopefully) won the auction.

  3. Step 3

Pay immediately. When you win an auction or buy items at a fixed price, eBay will send you a confirmation email. That email will have a link in it that you can click on to make a payment right away by credit card or through PayPal.

  4. Step 4

Wait to hear from the seller. Normally, you will receive an email from the seller shortly after winning an auction. This email usually includes payment information, including shipping charges. If the seller accepts personal checks, certified checks or money orders, he or she will include an address in the email to which you can mail your payment.

  5. Step 5

Prepare yourself to wait. If you pay for your items by personal check, the majority of sellers will not ship the items until your check has cleared your bank account. This could take up to 10 days in some cases.

Tips & Warnings
  • Any time you've got additional questions about how to pay for an item you've won on eBay, visit eBay's helpful Help page (see Resources below).
  • If you pay with an e-check through PayPal, you are sending a guaranteed payment to the seller. This will normally result in your items being shipped to you much faster than if you mail a personal check.
  • Take measures to keep identity thieves at bay. Changing your eBay password often and never sharing it with anyone are both great ways to assist eBay in their mission to protect your privacy online.
