How to Create a YouTube Account

YouTube is a revolutionary Web site featuring a comprehensive and eclectic database of videos. Membership is free, but registration is required. Fortunately, setting up an account on the site is an easy process.

  1. Step 1

    Access the YouTube home page (see the Resources section below).

  2. Step 2

    Click the 'Sign Up' link to begin the account creation process.

  3. Step 3

    Select the type of profile you'd like to create. YouTube offers different profiles depending on your area of expertise. If you're not sure what to select, go with the 'Standard' option. Note that you can change to a 'Guru' account later if you choose.

  4. Step 4

    Enter your email address.

  5. Step 5

    Select a username for the site.

  6. Step 6

    Type your chosen password in the 'Password' field and again in the 'Confirm Password' section.

  7. Step 7

    Select your country from the pull down menu.

  8. Step 8

    Type your US postal code, if applicable.

  9. Step 9

    Click your gender.

  10. Step 10

    Enter your date of birth.

  11. Step 11

    Type the text you see in the image into the 'Verification' box.

  12. Step 12

    Uncheck the 'Broadcast Yourself' email box if you do not wish to receive the YouTube newsletter.

  13. Step 13

    Check the 'I Agree' box to confirm your acceptance of YouTube's Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.

  14. Step 14

    Click 'Sign Up' to complete the process.

Tips & Warnings
  • For more information on account types, visit the YouTube Help Center and click on the link 'Account Information.'
  • If more than one person in your household wants to enjoy YouTube's content, it's advisable to create an account for each family. That way, each account can have its own Favorites lists and other personalized data.
  • An account is required on YouTube for most features, including posting videos, commenting on videos, and creating Favorites lists.
