Cars made after 1980 include a unique numerical identifier, known as a vehicle identification number (VIN), that can be used to check on the car's history. If you're in the market for a used car, but first would like to follow up on VIN's in used car ads, Yahoo! Autos can help.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

    Find Vehicles with VIN's

  1. Step 1

Go to the Yahoo Autos home page and select the 'Used Cars' tab (see the Resources section below).

  2. Step 2

Locate the 'Find A Used Car' box on the 'Used Cars' page. Use the pull-down menus to select the make and model of car you're interested in.

  3. Step 3

Type in your zip code and click 'Search.' You may also click on the 'Advanced Search' link if you want to search with more specific criteria, such as cars manufactured during specific years.

  4. Step 4

View all the available listings on the page that results from your search query. Many listings will include VIN's.

  5. Step 5

Copy the VIN for a car you wish to run a check on.

  6. Step 6

Click the 'Vehicle History Reports' text link above the listings.

  7. Check VIN's on Yahoo! Autos

  8. Step 1

Load the Vehicle History Reports page.

  9. Step 2

Enter the VIN in the box labeled 'Enter VIN Below.' If you have a car you want to check on but don't have the VIN, click the 'Get A Report' link instead.

  10. Step 3

View the limited report information on the AutoCheck page. You can view a few details for free, but for more detailed information you must purchase a report.

  11. Step 4

Select a type of history report from the pull down menu. You'll have several options, depending on whether you want to check a single VIN or a number of them.

  12. Step 5

Enter your credit card information, along with your home and email addresses.

  13. Step 6

Click 'Submit.' You will soon be able to access the detailed report for your selected vehicle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use VIN's to protect against buying a used car that has experienced repeated major problems.
  • For more information on using VIN's to protect yourself, see the Yahoo! Autos Help section.
  • While you are in no way obligated to purchase a car you check a VIN on, it does cost a fee to get a vehicle history report.
