How to Search Wikipedia from Any Web Site

You can search the vast amount of information available on Wikipedia from any Web site by adding the 'Wikr' bookmarklet to your browser. Here's how to go about it.

  • Computer with Internet access

    Set Up the Bookmarklet

  1. Step 1

    Open Internet Explorer. Make sure the 'Links' toolbar is available in your Internet Explorer browser window. If it isn't, add it by clicking 'View' and then 'Toolbars.' Then click 'Links' to make the 'Links' toolbar visible.

  2. Step 2

    Open the home page of the BlinkBits Web site to get the downloadable 'Wikr' bookmarklet (See the Resources section below).

  3. Step 3

    Add 'Wikr' to your browser toolbar by right clicking on the 'Wikr' hyperlink and choosing 'Add To Favorites.' Click 'OK' when the security alert appears, and then select the 'Links' folder when the 'Create In' prompt appears.

    Get more information on installing the Wikr bookmarklet at the Blinkbits Wikr page.

  5. Drag the Wikr Link to Your Toolbar

  6. Step 1

    Open the BlinkBits home page and place your mouse pointer on the 'Wikr' link. You can now drag the Wikr bookmarklet to your Links toolbar.

  7. Step 2

    Click and hold the mouse button down while dragging to the 'Links' toolbar. Release the mouse while it hovers over a convenient location on the 'Links' toolbar.

  8. Step 3

    Change the location of 'Wikr' on the 'Links' toolbar at any time by opening 'Organize Favorites' and then 'Links.' Drag 'Wikr' to the desired location.

  9. Learn To Use the Bookmarklet

  10. Step 1

    Enter search criteria into any search engine and click 'Go,' 'Search' or hit the Enter key to obtain results.

  11. Step 2

    Make your selection by clicking on the hyperlink to the article of interest.

  12. Step 3

    Highlight any word within the article text. Go to the 'Links' toolbar and click on 'Wikr' for additional information provided by Wikipedia.

  13. Step 4

    Identify the topic most relevant from the results listed and click on the Wikipedia hyperlink to go directly to Wikipedia article.

  14. Step 5

    Click on 'RSS' feed on the Wikipedia results page to subscribe to continually updated versions of a selected article.

Tips & Warnings
  • The 'Wikr' bookmarklet is also available for Firefox and Mac browsers.
  • Understand that Internet Explorer 'Favorites' are sometimes called 'Favelets' and Firefox 'Bookmarks' are sometimes called 'Bookmarklets.'
