How to Create a Wikipedia Account

Setting up an account with Wikipedia is not necessary if you plan to use the site as a research tool. However, if you want to post articles, add comments orgain access to other useful tools, you need to be a registered user.

Navigate the Correct Wikipedia Pages

1. Visit Wikipedia's home page to start the process of setting up your own Wikipedia account (see the Resources section below).

2. Click on 'English' or the language of your choice from the selection of languages listed on Wikipedia's main page.

3. Select 'Sign In/Create Account.' This link will appear near the top of the page.

Enter Your Log in Information

1. Think of a username that is easy to remember and suits Wikipedia's guidelines. Enter this username in the field provided.

2. Create a password that you will be able to remember (and that is different from your other Internet passwords).

3. Enter any other verification information requested by Wikipedia. When you are finished, click 'Create Account.'

Confirm Your Login Information

1. Check the inbox of the same email account you used to register with Wikipedia. Within minutes of registering, you should receive a confirmation email from Wikipedia.

2. Read the brief email regarding your account thoroughly, then click on the link included to confirm your login information.

3. Review the information on the Wikipedia page the link takes you to. It should say that you have successfully confirmed your log in information and created your Wikipedia account. If there is any problem with the process of setting up your account, you will be directed by Wikipedia on how to correct it.

4. Edit your preferences. This personalizes your experience at Wikipedia and ensures your security.
