How to Add Audio to Wikipedia

Enriching content on Wikipedia is an important way to participate in the evolution of this popular site. Fortunately, adding audio files to Wikipedia articles is a simple matter.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet connection
  • Wikipedia account
  • Audio file with OGG file extension

    Log in to Your Wikipedia Account

  1. Step 1

    Go to Wikipedia's home page and select the language in you wish to view this free Internet encyclopedia (see the Resources section below).

  2. Step 2

    Click on the 'Sign In' link and enter your username and password.

  3. Step 3

    Click on the 'Main Page' link to return to Wikipedia's main page.

  4. Upload Your Audio File

  5. Step 1

    Click on the 'Upload File' link in the 'Toolbox' menu of Wikipedia.

  6. Step 2

    Confirm that your audio file has been saved in the correct format and with a unique and descriptive file name.

  7. Step 3

    Type the name of your file and its file extension ('.ogg') in the 'Source Filename' field or click on the 'Browse' button to find this file on your computer. Clicking on the file name will add it to the 'Source Filename' field.

  8. Step 4

    Complete the 'Summary' field with information on the file's authorship and/or ownership as outlined in the 'Wikipedia:Media' article.

  9. Step 5

    Select the licensing statement that applies to this file from the 'Licensing' drop-down menu.

  10. Step 6

    Click the 'Upload File' button when you have provided all the information required by Wikipedia.

  11. Add Audio to a Wikipedia Article

  12. Step 1

    Visit the article you wish to add the audio file to and click on the 'Edit' link in the appropriate section.

  13. Step 2

    Use the following format to add your audio file link within the text of the article: '{{Listen|filename=Name of file.ogg|title=Title of this file|description=The description of this file|format=[[Ogg]]}}.'

  14. Step 3

    Hit the 'Save Page' button when you have completed your edits. Your audio file will go 'live' as soon as you have done this.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wikipedia uses Ogg Vorbis for sound and limits file size to 20 megabytes.
  • Uploading copyrighted audio files to Wikipedia is against the law. Make sure that you are aware of all copyright laws that pertain to the material you wish to add to any of Wikipedia's pages before you begin this process.
