A cover letter introduces you to a potential employer in a way that a resume simply can't. While a resume outlines your work experience, education, training and honors, a cover letter allows you to express interest in the job while also showcasing your career goals and personality. On Monster's job search site, you can easily add a cover letter to accompany your resume.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access

    Access Your Account

  1. Step 1

Visit the Monster home page (see Resources below) and select the link to "Log in."

  2. Step 2

Enter your username and password in the appropriate boxes. Note that if you have enabled password memory and/or cookies in your Web browser, you may be automatically logged in at this point.

  3. Step 3

Click on the link to "Letters" to begin to create cover letters to match your posted resumes.

  4. Create a Cover Letter

  5. Step 1

Click the button labeled "Create a New Cover Letter." In this window, you will also notice how many available cover letters you have left out of a possible 5 total.

  6. Step 2

Choose a template from the "Templates" drop-down menu. You can choose a "College Grad" cover letter or a "Relevant Work Experience" cover letter theme.

  7. Step 3

Give your resume a title in the appropriate box. Employers will not see this title, so choose a name that will help you remember it. More than likely, you will have a cover letter for each of your resumes posted, so make this cover letter's title correspond to the matching resume.

  8. Step 4

Enter the text of your cover letter. Here, you should only mention which job you are applying for, facts NOT found on your resume, and related work experience that makes you a great candidate for the job. End with at least two ways an employer can contact you.

  9. Step 5

Select the button "Save Letter." Your cover letter is now saved and can be altered for different jobs or postings.

Tips & Warnings
  • When entering a cover letter on Monster, be sure to use only plain-text fonts. This Web site does not support HTML or scripting.
  • Be sure that your computer's virus protection software is up-to-date if you are emailing cover letters directly from your email address. There's nothing worse than infecting the computer system of a potential employer with a digital virus.
  • Never give out personal information, even to employers. Check out the Monster Security Center (see Resources below) for more information on ways to keep your identity safe while still divulging enough information to keep employers interested.
