When you are looking for jobs, the last thing you want to worry about is a scam. However, there are unethical parties who utilize job search sites like Monster to capitalize on vulnerable people looking for work. So, here are a few tips that can help you avoid scams on Monster.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with Internet Access

Follow Simple Guidelines to Identify and Avoid Scams

Step1
Spot scams that are "too good to be true." These are the ads that say that you can earn "thousands of dollars" for working only a few hours a week. We all know that you can't get something for nothing, and these ads are almost always a fraud.
Step2
Research the company. Check with the Better Business Bureau, consumer councils and other competitors in the market to see if this business really exists.
Step3
Avoid postings for jobs that require an initial investment. Unless it is with a reputable sales company like Mary Kay or Avon, these ads are frequently scams.

Learn About Frequent Scams

Step1
Research scams by logging on at the Monster home page (see Resources below) and visiting the Security Center by clicking on the link "Be Safe."
Step2
Read about the latest scams in the lists provided. These include, but are not limited to, work-at-home scams, email scams and business opportunity fraud.
Step3
Take notes on scams that apply to positions you're looking for in your search.

Safeguard Your Information

Step1
Keep your username and password to yourself. Never share this information with anyone in person or online.
Step2
Memorize your username and password when possible. Try not to write them down unless you absolutely have to and be sure to put them in a safe place if you do.
Step3
Know that Monster will never ask you for your username and password, in email or otherwise. If you receive an email from Monster asking you for personal information, it is definitely a fake and should be trashed immediately.

Tips & Warnings

  • Create an account online with Monster only by logging in through the Web site directly (see Resources below). Never log in through a link in an email sent to you or through a third-party Web portal.
  • Always log out of your Monster account when using a public or shared computer. If you are consistent with this, you can dramatically reduce your chances of phishing, or account fraud. See the Monster Security Center for more details (see Resources below).
