How to Sell Electronics On Craigslist

As soon as the newest high-tech electronics, such as digital cameras, HDTVs and smart phones, hit the market, people want to sell their older but often perfectly usable electronics. The online site Craigslist provides sellers with the opportunity to sell their items for free. Here's how to sell your electronics on Craigslist.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with Internet access

Post an Ad

Step1
Go to Craigslist (see the link in Resources below) and click "Post to Classifieds."
Step2
Select the subcategory "For Sale/Wanted."
Step3
Select the subcategory "Electronics."
Step4
Choose the local area that best suits your location. (Your ad will also be listed in your general region, so don't worry that others outside your immediate vicinity won't be able to see it.)
Step5
Fill in the required green fields in the posting window: title, description and your email address. For your protection, Craigslist will generate an anonymous email address for you that buyers can use to contact you. The anonymous email directs all inquiries to the email account you used when you signed up so that your real email stays private.

Follow Guidelines to Help You Sell

Step1
Set a reasonable price. If you ask too much for your item, it will not sell easily (if at all). If you ask too little, you could lose out on money. Look for similar ads and price your electronics accordingly.
Step2
Add an image of your electronics. Doing so can often help you sell your items faster.
Step3
Repost your ad daily if you aren't getting a response. Keep in mind that you have to delete your old ad before you can repost it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always remove your ad after you've sold the item to avoid inquiries about electronics that you no longer have.
  • Remember that free ads on Craigslist expire every 7 days, so you will need to repost your ad after this time if you haven't sold your electronics items.
  • Never let buyers convince you to accept a payment method other than that which you specified. If a buyer does so, it's probably a scam, especially if the offer is for the trade of other electronics.
  • To avoid scams, research common fraud practices on Craigslist (see the link in Resources below).
  • When posting an ad, be sure to include it in a single local area only. Violation of this rule could cause your account to be blocked or flagged by Craigslist staff.
