How to Buy Jewelry on Craigslist

One of the largest market forums in the world, Craigslist offers buyers access to a wide range of jewelry at the click of a mouse. Follow these steps to make a purchase.

Instructions

  1. Choose Your Search Criteria

    • 1

Go to the Craigslist home page to search for jewelry (see Resources below).

    • 2

Specify your state, city or country to look for jewelry only in your local area.

    • 3

Click the "Jewelry" link to see current ads.

    • 4

Use criteria such as price and keywords to focus your search among the jewelry listings.

    Express Interest in an Item

    • 5

Contact the seller. Use the embedded email address underlined in blue within the text of each ad, or call if the seller provides a phone number.

    • 6

Ask the seller any questions you have regarding the item. For safety reasons, you may want to use a secondary email address and only your first name until you trust the seller.

    • 7

Ask the seller to provide certification (such as AGS, EGI, GIA, or IGL) and laser inscription papers for high-end jewelry pieces.

    • 8

Negotiate until you reach an accord. You also might try bartering an item for the jewelry in lieu of paying cash.

    Finalize Your Purchase

    • 9

Arrange for delivery or pickup of the item. If meeting in person, take a friend with you, and always meet in public during the daytime.

    • 10

Pay the seller for the item upon delivery. Never use a personal check, since it includes your bank account and routing numbers. Instead, arrange to send a money order or pay cash in person. Ask for a receipt. For expensive jewelry, use a bank-issued check instead of handing over a large cash sum.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't know the value or authenticity of a certain piece, arrange with the seller to have it appraised before you buy it. You choose and pay the appraiser.

  • Craigslist will never email you asking for your personal information or Web site user name and password. Any email that does is fraudulent and should be reported to the Web site immediately. You can view examples of spoofed emails on Craigslist (see Resources below).
