How to Take Zyrtec

Zyrtec (cetirizine) is an antihistamine prescribed to combat the symptoms of seasonal or perennial allergies as well as chronic hives. As with most antihistamines, Zyrtec can be used for immediate contact related allergies as well as long term conditions like those mentioned above. Here's how to use Zyrtec.

  1. Step 1

    Know the adult dosage. Daily dosage for people six years and older is a five to ten milligram dose (depending on symptom severity) once a day to be taken with or without food and water.

  2. Step 2

    Know the proper dosage for children. For children under six the recommended dose is two and a half milligrams of cetirizine syrup and no more than five milligrams per day.

  3. Step 3

    Determine the correct dosage for your age. For patients over 77, five milligrams once daily is recommended.

  4. Step 4

    Contact your physician about alternative treatment options if your symptoms do not improve or worsen.

  • Breast feeding should be avoided while taking Zyrtec.
  • Be careful when driving or operating heavy machinery while taking Zyrtec.

  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease or liver disease before taking Zyrtec.
  • Measure the liquid form of Zyrtec in a special measuring spoon to ensure the proper dosage.
  • Store Zyrtec at room temperature and avoid extreme heat and moisture.
  • If you miss a dose of Zyrtec you should take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, you should skip the dose.
  • Side effects from taking Zyrtec can include drowsiness, headache, dizziness and dry mouth.
  • Since Zyrtec may make you drowsy, alcohol and other medications which cause drowsiness should be avoided.
  • The effects of Zyrtec are more potent in the elderly, especially drowsiness.
  • Side effects include drowsiness, fatigue, and dry mouth. Children may also experience stomach pain and vomiting.
  • Do not take Zyrtec if you have had an allergic reaction to hydroxizine without informing your doctor first.
  • Go to the emergency room immediately if you have an allergic reaction to Zyrtec. Allergic reactions can involve hives, difficulty breathing and swelling in the face, lips, tongue and throat.
  • Tell your doctor of any drugs you are taking before taking Zyrtec.
