Crown molding is a decorative framework used at the top of a room where walls meet the ceiling. Crown molding is also known as cornice. Different types of crown molding made from wood, plastic or foam are available in the market. Cutting crown molding requires concentration and precision. Even a slight error can result in a shabby look. Read on to learn how to cut crown molding.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Measure the wall for which the crown molding is to be cut. Be as accurate as possible.
Step2
Use an adjustable protractor to measure the angle where two walls meet. Use a miter angle calculator to determine miter and bevel angle.
Step3
Place the crown on the miter saw. Ensure that ceiling edge of the crown is firm against the base of the saw. Similarly, the wall edge of the crown needs to be pressed firmly against the saw fence.
Step4
Cut the crown while making sure that it fits the saw properly throughout the cutting process.

Tips & Warnings

  • Software and detailed spreadsheets are available online to give you an exact measure of the angle and corresponding miter.
  • Corner crown moldings can be cut at 45 degrees so they fit well when placed against each other on the wall.
  • The method for cutting crown molding depends on the type of miter saw, whether it is a miter or compound miter. Before proceeding with cutting crowns with any saw, check the instruction manual.
