Your favorite beverage can be marred by the change in color as you drink it. Instead of being the recipient of this prank, be the mastermind behind it. Read on to learn how to make surprise ice cubes.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Food coloring
  • A glass

Step1
Pour one cup of cold, filtered water into a bowl and add five or more drops of blue food coloring. The water should be a very strong blue color.
Step2
Take an ice cube tray and fill it half way with filtered water. Freeze the water for at least two hours or until the water has completely frozen.
Step3
Take the ice cube tray out of the freezer.
Step4
Fill each ice cube compartment with a half-teaspoon of blue water on top of the ice. You want to have at least a quarter inch of blue water floating on top of the ice cubes.
Step5
Place the ice cube tray in the freezer. Freeze the rest of the water until the cubes have completely frozen.
Step6
Ask your victim if they would like a glass of juice or soda. Offer a drink that is opaque so they can’t see the rogue ice cube.
Step7
Add one blue ice cube to the glass, then add three or four clear ice cubes on top. Pour the requested opaque drink into the glass.
Step8
Wait a few moments before offering the drink to your victim. This allows the ice cubes to start melting into the drink.
Step9
As the drink sits longer and longer, more of the blue food coloring will melt into the drink, turning it blue.
Step10
As your victim figures out that their drink is turning blue, reveal your prank to them. Or, you can let them stew for a bit before revealing your mischief.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can try other colors for this prank as well. People react most strongly to blue coloring since it is not a naturally occurring color in food.
  • Try layering different colors on top of each other by freezing it at different stages.
  • You also might want to hide a plastic bug inside one of the ice cubes.
