Download the Xbox controller software. If you do not have the installation program yet, or if you have lost the CD, you can download the program on the official Microsoft Web site.

  2. Step 2

Install the software on your computer. Insert the software installation disc on your CD drive or continue with the download from the Microsoft site. Make sure that that Xbox controller is not yet attached to your computer.

  3. Step 3

Turn off your computer. Before connecting the device to your PC, make sure that your computer is properly turned off.

  4. Step 4

Attach the controller to a computer port. Look for the USB port on the back of your computer console. Attach the connecting device to the port. Verify the connector is correctly attached, by checking for the game controller icon on your computer’s "Control Panel."

  5. Step 5

Conduct a test. To ensure that your device will work properly, click the "Start" button, then click "Run," afterwards type "Joy.cpl" and then click "Ok."

  6. Step 6

Use the "Device Calibration Wizard." If the configuration is correct, you will be prompted with a message upon clicking the controls or moving the arrows. Click "Apply" and see if the controller is functional.

  7. Step 7

Click the "Ok" button twice if you are comfortable with the current setting. If not, reset it according to your specifications.

Tips & Warnings
  • The Xbox controller has wired and wireless receivers. You can use this to connect the device into a USB port so that you can use the other accessories such as the headset or racing wheel. The six-foot cable can be easily connected to the USB port located on the front or back of your computer.
