Many couples choose to save the top teir of their wedding cake. By tradition, they set it aside until their first anniversary. Then, they take it out, snack on it and remember the big day and the year since. Saving a wedding cake for your anniversary is relatively easy, and it can be accomplished with very little planning. Here’s how to save the top layer of your wedding cake.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Plan for a sealed plastic container to be at the cake cutting. The most important part of keeping the cake from drying up is sealing it from outside air and sealing the moisture in.
Step2
Enlist a friend or family member to be in charge of saving the cake. When the cake cutting begins, have them secure the top tier and place it in the plastic container.
Step3
Set the cake set aside for the remainder of the ceremony. If you can, you should store it in some kind of refrigeration unit.
Step4
Take the cake home and freeze it for the year.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you’re storing it for less than a year, then freezing isn’t necessary and you can simply store the cake in your refrigerator.
  • Make sure your plastic container is large enough to hold the entire top tier. There’s a good chance that you’ll have to buy a new container just for your wedding cake.
  • Don’t forget to save the figurines, too, if you have them on top of your cake.
  • Don’t pick at the cake. The fewer times you open the container, the better it is for the cake’s preservation. Also, you want the cake to be in tact when your anniversary finally does come.
  • Store the cake where nobody else will pick at it. People unfamiliar with the tradition of saving the wedding cake might be tempted just to have a tiny bite.
