Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Massachusetts marriage licenses
  • Birth certificates
  • Medical certificates
  1. Step 1

Register jointly with your partner for a marriage license in any community in Massachusetts. You must get married within 60 days of getting your marriage license. Be aware that your license is only valid in the state of Massachusetts.

  2. Step 2

Pay the marriage license application fee. This fee will be from $4 to $15 depending on where you obtain your application.

  3. Step 3

Obtain a medical certificate from a physician licensed to practice in the state of Massachusetts. Non-residents can apply for a blank medical certificate before they arrive in Massachusetts.

  4. Step 4

Bring along your birth certificates, as these will be required to prove that both partners are at least 18 years of age.

  5. Step 5

Choose a judge, marriage chapel or church that will marry gay and lesbian couples. This, of course, is at the discretion of that institution.

Tips & Warnings
  • Research chapels or weddings services before applying for your license; this will save you time.
  • Be aware that not all communities are willing to provide you with a marriage license.
