How to Come Out at Work

The decision to come out at work is one of the most difficult decisions gay men and lesbians have to make. There is much emphasis placed on professional interactions in the workplace, and coming out at work can put strain on these relationships. Choosing when, where and to whom to come out is a critical part of the process.

1. Spend time developing your professional credibility first. Develop key relationships and establish yourself as a dependable and critical part of the team.
2. Make your coming out a gradual process and something that you will discuss on a need to know basis. There is no need to come out to the entire workplace if you are uncomfortable doing so.
3. Decide on one or two close colleagues to tell first. Make sure that you have their trust.
4. Find friends who will help support you through the process and come to your defense as a key member of the workplace.
5. Familiarize yourself with your company’s policies towards discrimination. Do not let people push you around or attempt to spread bias towards you.

Tips & Warnings

• If you are asked about your relationships and are uncomfortable revealing details to your colleague, use indirect expressions, such as “I am in a relationship,” until you are comfortable.
• Employers have no legal right to know or even question your sexuality. Do not feel forced to reveal your sexuality against your will.
