The decision to come out at college can be an exciting, learning and growing period of your life. College is often a very understanding atmosphere in which to come to grips with your sexuality. There are usually support groups and gay and lesbian organizations that can provide help and understanding.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Information about college support groups
  • Friends

Step1
Be confident and assured in your sexual orientation before you make the decision to come out at college. Do not feel pressure from friends or those who may seek a potential relationship with you.
Step2
Research any gay and lesbian support groups your school might have. These groups can provide help and advice on coming out.
Step3
Tell your closest friends first and allow them to support you in your decision. They can be a great source of strength.
Step4
Reveal your sexuality only to those people you trust or feel must know. Not everyone may be understanding or sympathetic towards your choices.
Step5
Choose a time that is right to tell your parents if you feel it is necessary. Some students choose not to reveal their sexuality to their parents if they think it will become an obstacle.

Tips & Warnings

  • Give yourself time to come to grips with your own sexuality. This is key before attempting to explain yourself fully to others.
  • Realize that this is a growing process and may take time.
  • Do not reveal your sexuality to people who you think may try to harm you physically or emotionally. You do not have anything to prove to them.
