How to Find a Quiet Beach in the Outer Banks

The Outer Banks are a series of barrier islands along the North Carolina shore. If you are planning to spend some time there, plan to spend time at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Instructions

    • 1

To visit the area, you'll need to make your way to North Carolina Route 12 - whether you're arriving from the north or the south.

    • 2

If you're entering from the north, the first beach that you will get to is Coquina Beach on Bodie Island on the ocean side of the island. Coquina is less likely to be crowded than the nearby area at the Bodie Island Lighthouse.

    • 3

Continuing south from here on Route 12, you will pass through the areas Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo, and then you will reach another day use area. You'll be able to stop in these areas and enjoy the surf and seek shells while beachcombing.

    • 4

Continuing down through Hatteras Island, you will reach a beach area on the other side of Avon and its fishing area at Canadian Hole on the Pamlico Sound side of the islands.

    • 5

Continuing South, you will reach Buxton and Frisco - after which there is another fishing pier and a swimming beach before you reach Hatteras.

    • 6

And, if you head even further south, you'll need to cross the inlet by ferry to get to the swimming beach at Ocracoke.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are various other spots where you can stop and enjoy the 70 miles of coastline.

  • Want to extend your stay? Plan to camp along the islands.

  • Swimming is only sanctioned at lifeguarded beaches in the area and is considered to be an activity you take part in at your own risk.
