How to Clean a Mattress

Mattresses come in various sizes ranging from twin or single to grand king. They are usually placed on the floor but often put atop a bed frame made of wood, aluminum, steel or iron. Mattresses come filled with natural fibers, synthetic material and even air. Know that there spring mattress, air mattress and foam mattress. Dirty mattresses cause respiratory illnesses and/or skin problems. Here is how to clean mattresses.

Things You'll Need:

  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • Powdered detergent
  • Sponge
  • Vacuum cleaner
  1. Step 1

    Spread the mattress in an open space so that it is accessible from all sides.

  2. Step 2

    Plug the vacuum cleaner in the power socket. Carefully vacuum the mattress using long strokes covering its entire surface. Flip the mattress over and repeat the process.

  3. Step 3

    Use a good sponge dipped in cold soapy water to remove stains. Make sure to squeeze out maximum water from the sponge before rubbing it over the stain.

  4. Step 4

    Use powdered detergent or baking soda with cold water to freshen up the mattress, especially if it has urine stench.

  5. Step 5

    Keep the wet mattress in sunlight.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use of mattress pads prolongs the life of the mattress as well as makes it easier to clean.
  • Flip the mattress every three months to ensure uniform wearing.
  • Do not saturate the mattress with cleaning solution as molds grow inside the mattress that has not been properly dried.
  • Avoid using dry cleaning solutions to clean a mattress.
