How to Add a Brace for Installing a Crystal Chandelier

Because crystal chandeliers are heavy objects, you will need to install a brace before installing the crystal chandelier. Ceiling fan braces hold up to 150 pounds and are generally used to brace chandeliers as well. Follow these steps to accomplish this task.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase an expandable fan brace and an octagonal metal junction or outlet box from a home improvement or lighting store.

  2. Step 2

If you are replacing an old light fixture, cut the power to it before you remove it. If you are not replacing an old fixture, be sure the power to the circuit you are using is off. Make sure the power is off by using a circuit power tester.

  3. Step 3

Screw the octagonal box to a brace between two of the ceiling joists where the chandelier will hang. If you find that there is not a two by four wood brace between the joists, you can install an expandable metal hanger bar that is used for ceiling fans.

  4. Step 4

If you do use the expandable metal hanger bar, you can either put them in the attic or into the rough opening in the ceiling used for the chandelier.

  5. Step 5

If you are using the metal box, screw it to the bracket using a U-bolt.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always be sure the power supply is cut off at the circuit breaker before doing any work on your light fixture.
