How to Plan a Summer Vacation in Alaska

The Last Frontier of Alaska is a vast span of wilderness and adventure. It’s no wonder so many families and single travelers alike are turning to the 49th state to spend some or all of their summer vacation. Day cruises to see the glaciers, fishing, hunting, Native American cultural events and general wilderness watching are abundant throughout the state. Follow these steps to start planning your trip.

Things You'll Need:

  • A pencil or pen and paper
  • An Internet connection
  • A telephone
  • A credit card
  1. Step 1

    Consider your budget to decide how much you can afford to spend on your hotel stay, airfare, transportation, attractions, meals and tips.

  2. Step 2

    Research and list the activities and events that most interest you.

  3. Step 3

    Browse the sample itineraries published by the Alaskan Tourism Board (see Resources below).

  4. Step 4

    Make a list of amenities you want the most in your accommodations.

  5. Step 5

    Search Hotels.com (see Resources below) for hotels, motels and inns that meet your price, location and amenities criteria.

  6. Step 6

    Ask your travel agent or search your favorite online travel broker for packages including a car rental and a hotel stay that fits your bill. Plan to fly into the Anchorage or Juneau Airport.

  7. Step 7

    Pack your suitcases and remember to bring sunscreen.

  8. Step 8

    Print out your itinerary to bring along with you.

  9. Step 9

    Check the weather a couple days before departure to allow you to pack properly.
