How to Plan a Summer Vacation at Alcatraz Island

Ever wanted to visit "The Rock," the former maximum security prison located on Alcatraz Island? You can't sleep on Alcatraz Island but there are plenty of things to see and do there. Make sure you plan ahead. Tickets are frequently sold out days or even weeks in advance. Follow these steps to start planning your trip.

Instructions

1. Plan to fly into either San Francisco or San Jose, California Airports. Or, you can drive there to make a road trip out of the vacation.

2. Make a list of amenities you want most important with your accommodations.

3. Search Hotels.com (see Resources below) for hotels, motels and inns that meet your criteria of price, location and amenities. The city nearest to Alcatraz Island is San Francisco.

4. Ask your travel agent or search your favorite online travel broker for packages including a car rental and a hotel stay that fits your bill.

5. Choose an Alcatraz Island tour time and purchase tickets online. Consider visiting both Alcatraz Island and Angel Island.

6. Pack your suitcases and remember to bring sunscreen and light clothing.

7. Print out your itinerary to bring along with you.

8. Check the weather a couple days before departure to allow you to pack properly.

Tips & Warnings

• Wear a large-brimmed hat. There are thousands of birds that often drop "white badges of honor" on unsuspecting visitors.

• For the full experience, opt to purchase the audio tour.

• The only company that can actually dock at Alcatraz Island is Alcatraz Cruises. Don't be fooled by others that offer an "Alcatraz Tour." They're only permitted to cruise by the island.

• Reserve your tickets well in advance. You can purchase tickets online or call to make reservations.

• Eat before you go. Food is not sold on "The Rock." Only a limited menu is available on the boat.
