Get reservations well in advance for lodging. Most hotels start taking reservations for the next Fourth on July 5.

Start the day with a hearty breakfast. You're going to need it.

Attend the annual National Archives Celebration of the Fourth of July. Start your day with a ceremonial Presentation of the Colors, and a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence by Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and other signers of the Declaration.

Get out early to stake out a spot on Constitution Avenue between 7th Street and 17th Street. Expect over 300,000 people. The earlier you get there, the better view of the parade you'll have.

Watch America's Independence Day Parade. The annual parade begins at 11:45 at Constitution Ave and 7th Street.

Get lunch from one of the vendors, or eat at a restaurant on the parade route.

Visit the Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall. The 2007 subject for the Folklife Festival is Virginia, a first for the state.

Attend the Premier Fourth of July Holiday Concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol.

View fireworks over the Capitol from anywhere along the National Mall, or from West Potomac Park near the Reflecting Pool.

Tips & Warnings
Use public transportation to get around the city on the Fourth of July.
Bring bottled water and snacks as well as sunscreen. Don't forget insect repellent for the evening.
Wear comfortable shoes. Be prepared to walk to most locations.
Fourth of July temperatures can be around 90 degrees F. Avoid tight clothing. Plan to take frequent breaks inside air conditioned buildings.
Don't bring alcoholic beverages, fireworks, personal grills or other prohibited items.
Be prepared to go through security checkpoints.
