How to Book Train Travel From Madrid, Spain to Zurich, Switzerland

Trains are a popular and efficient way to travel in Europe. If you're going from Madrid to Zurich, plan the trip in advance so you won't have any unexpected travel delays while you're abroad.

1. Book moderately priced travel from Madrid to Zurich at the RENFE Web site (see Resources below).

2. Reserve a trip from Madrid to Barcelona via the ALVIA route. This will be your first leg on your way to Zurich.

3. Reserve the second part of your trip, from Barcelona to Zurich, via the TRENHOTEL route.

4. Be aware that you'll need a customer login and password to register on the RENFE Web site.

5. Print out the confirmation page and bring it with you on your trip.

Tips & Warnings

• Practice patience. RENFE is the state-run rail system. While most intercity routes run on time, some of the long-distance trains only travel late at night can be slow.

• Be aware that if you cancel your reservations more than two hours after you book online, you may be subject to a 15 percent cancellation fee.
