Iraq and its surrounding areas have made an indelible print on civilization. Unfortunately, war has made the country off-limits for tourists, but it's still possible to find accommodations and travel within limits if you have an approved reason for being there. Here's how to plan a trip to Iraq.

Find Accommodations in Iraq

1. If you have gained governmental clearance to travel to Iraq, the safety of your accommodations cannot be overstressed. Your best bet is to follow the directions of whatever organization has permitted your entry. The Iraq Tourism Board does not maintain a Web site or phone number where you can book accommodations.

2. If you are a business traveler, your company has probably brokered a deal with a relatively safe hotel or other type of accommodations, whether in Baghdad or elsewhere. Lodging rates tend to be inexpensive.

3. If you are a non-commissioned officer or aid worker, U.S. recovery organizations will have set up accommodations that represent your best chance of safety.

Getting to Iraq

1. Check for local flights from Jordan and Lebanon. If you have dual U.S. and Iraqi citizenship, this might be an option for you.

2. Business travelers with a defined purpose in Iraq are sometimes permitted to enter, but it is extremely difficult.

Travel in Iraq

1. Travel only when necessary. Attacks on civilian brigades and supply convoys are frequent and the roads are not safe.

2. Travel during the day if you have no other choice. Night "incursions" are more frequent.

3. Be ready to show your passport. Your travel will be subject to scrutiny by the U.S. and Iraqi security forces at numerous checkpoints. Before traveling, ask the U.S. State Department for current travel advisories and procedures related to Iraq (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

• If you book accommodations in Iraq online, use a Web site that offers updated information on hotels safe for travelers.

• If you are caught in Iraq as a tourist, you will be immediately deported back to the United States. Access for Americans largely remains restricted to the military, members of governmental delegations, military contractors and journalists.

• The safest regions to travel are in the Kurdish north and near the Kuwaiti border in the south. The greater Baghdad region is very dangerous.
