To set up a communications network in Microsoft Vista, you need the right networking hardware; Vista installation wizards will take care of the rest. Here's how to set up a Vista network.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Microsoft Vista operating system
  • Networking routing hub or wireless conversion cards
  1. Step 1

Decide if you are going to run a wireless network or an ethernet network. Purchase the necessary hardware for your network type.

  2. Step 2

Install all required hardware on the computers in your network, using compatible network adapters.

  3. Step 3

Fire up your computer and launch the Vista Control Panel. Select "Network and Internet," and then choose the "Network and Sharing Center."

  4. Step 4

Choose the "Set Up a Network" option. If you want a wireless network, click "Set Up a Wireless Network or Access Point." This opens the network connections wizard.

  5. Step 5

Follow the steps of the connection wizard. Check if your network is working properly after you have completed the wizard.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ethernet networks usually require some kind of routing hub, and wireless networks require each computer in the network to have a conversion card installed.
  • Buy high-quality components for the best performance. Read reviews to guide your purchases of networking hardware.
  • Wireless networks can be finicky. Line-of-sight connections--that is, no concrete walls to block the wireless signal--work best for wireless networks .
