How to Spend the Fourth of July in Arkansas

If you're looking for special ways to celebrate Independence Day in Arkansas, just follow these steps.

Instructions

1. Join in fun family-style games at local events like the "Fun on the Fourth Day" at Pinnacle Mountain State Park in Little Rock.

2. Fly the flag on your front porch or lawn and have an old-fashioned family brunch before attending a 4th of July parade in your area.

3. Spend the whole weekend camping at one of Arkansas's beautiful state parks. Many have special family events and fireworks on the 4th of July and the days leading up to it (see Resources below).

4. Attend the annual "Rodeo of the Ozarks," held each year in Springdale over four days during the town's July 4 celebrations. Events include Saddle Bronco Riding, Bull Riding, Steer Wrestling, Tie-Down Roping, Barrel Racing, Bareback Riding and Team Roping.

5. Watch the fireworks over a river or lake for a double treat. Many cities hold their annual fireworks on a levee, island or lakefront. Check your area listings for fireworks on the water near you (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

• For the younger set, hand out glow-in-the-dark tubes and bracelets so they can join in the fun safely. Even simple fireworks like sparklers can be dangerous in the hands of children.
