Choosing a rabbi to officiate your wedding is one of the most critical choices you make. He will be the one who dictates what you can and cannot do during the wedding ceremony. So, make your choice carefully!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide what type of wedding ceremony you would like to have within the Jewish faith. The type of ceremony will largely determine who officiates the wedding.

  2. Step 2

If you are already a member of a synagogue and will be marrying in that location, the presiding rabbi serving at that synagogue will more than likely perform the ceremony.

  3. Step 3

Sometimes synagogues will allow a rabbi who does not serve at that particular location to perform a ceremony. However, these instances are very rare. Be sure to check with the synagogue's office for regulations on this matter. Be certain you know exactly why you would like an exception to be made before making contact with the synagogue.

  4. Step 4

When considering a rabbi, you will need to determine his beliefs concerning marriage and each person's role in the marriage. These beliefs should align with yours.

  5. Step 5

Choose a rabbi both you and your intended are comfortable with. If you are not comfortable with the rabbi, awkward situations could arise.

  6. Step 6

If you come from different faith backgrounds, it is acceptable to have two officiants representing two different faiths at a wedding. Again, be sure to check on synagogue or other location policy and communicate your wishes at the very beginning of the meeting.
