How to Make a Transparent PNG With ImageReady

ImageReady will support 240-bit RGB PNGs and 8-bit palette based PNGs, which the program refers to PNG-24 and PNG-8.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • ImageReady
  • A computer

    32-bit RGBA Transparent PNG

  1. Step 1

    Open the file you want to change to a transparent PNG with ImageReady.

  2. Step 2

    Click on the lasso tool and draw a loop around the object you want to crop out.

  3. Step 3

    Invert the selection by clicking on “Select” then “Inverse.”

  4. Step 4

    If you want to feather the edge, do so by clicking on “Select” then “Feather” and setting a value.

  5. Step 5

    Erase everything outside the loop by clicking on “Edit” then “Clear.”

  6. Step 6

    Open the optimize palette in the sub window by clicking on “Window” then “Show Optimize.”

  7. Step 7

    Select PNG-24 from the pull down menu at the upper left corner.

  8. Step 8

    Select “No Matte” in the Matte pull down list.

  9. Step 9

    Check the transparency checkbox.

  10. Step 10

    Check the “Interlaced” checkbox for an interlaced PNG. (Optional)

  11. Step 11

    Click “File” then “Save Optimized As” and select where you want to save your file to and a name for the file.

  12. Step 12

    Click “Ok.”

  14. Step 1

    Open the file you want to change to a transparent PNG with ImageReady.

  15. Step 2

    Click on the lasso tool and draw a loop around the object you want to crop out.

    Invert the selection by clicking on “Select” then “Inverse.”

  17. Step 4

    If you want to feather the edge, do so by clicking on “Select” then “Feather” and setting a value.

    Open the optimize palette in the sub window by clicking on “Window” then “Show Optimize”.

  20. Step 7

    Select “PNG-8” from the format pull-down list.

  21. Step 8

    Select an appropriate palette type, "Perceptual" is default.

  22. Step 9

    Select “No Matte” in the matte pull down list.

  23. Step 10

    Set “Colors” to “256” or “Auto.”

  24. Step 11

    Check the “Interlaced” checkbox for an interlaced PNG. (Optional)

  25. Step 12

    Click “File” then “Save Optimized As” and select where you want to save your file to and a name for the file.

  26. Step 13

    Click “Ok.”

Tips & Warnings
  • ImageReady is not capable of support grayscale images, however you could save a gray-scale as an 8-bit color mapped image.
  • Single color transparency isn’t supported in RGB images.
