How to Make Corn Pone

Corn pone is very quick and easy to make. Since there's no wheat in this dish it's suitable for those with gluten or wheat allergies. Does this Spark an idea?

  • 2 cups cornmeal
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. lard or shortening
  • Milk
  • Cornmeal

Instructions

    • 1

      Preheat your oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).

      Mix together the cornmeal, baking powder and salt.

    • 3

      Cut in the lard and rub with fingers until the mixture resembles fine bread crumbs.

      Add enough milk to make a stiff batter.

    • 5

      Form the dough into cakes with your hands.

    • 6

      Place into a greased baking pan.

    • 7

      Bake for 20-30 minutes, until the corn pone is golden brown.
