Obtaining green tomatoes might be a little difficult if you don’t grow your own, but it’s worth going to a little extra trouble to make these delicious, tart-tasting fried tomatoes.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Green tomatoes
  • Salt
  • All-purpose flour
  • Oil
  • Pepper
  • 4 large green tomatoes
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste (or your choice of seasonings)
  • Vegetable oil for frying
Step1
Slice tomatoes using a sharp knife.
Step2
Sprinkle salt over the slices then stack them on a plate. Let them rest for around 6 hours.
Step3
Mix the flour, salt and pepper (or your choice of seasonings).
Step4
Heat 1 quarter inch of oil to medium heat in a skillet or pan.
Step5
Coat both sides of each tomato slice in seasoned flour and shake lightly to remove the excess.
Step6
Lay the slices carefully in the hot oil and fry until golden brown.
Step7
Flip them over then fry the other side.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use your choice of herbs or seasoned salts such as celery salt for extra flavor.
  • Replace half the flour with half a cup of corn meal for a thicker tastier coating.
  • If you don’t let the tomatoes sit for several hours before frying they’ll be soggy and it’s difficult to get the coating to stick.
