How to Draw People

Many people who consider themselves reasonably good artists are afraid to try to draw people. The truth is that drawing people is no more difficult than drawing anything else. You just need to remember to draw what you see instead of what you know is there.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Drawing Pad
  • Drawing pencils
  • Eraser
  1. Step 1

Assemble your drawing materials. A pencil, sketchbook and eraser are the only tools you really need.

  2. Step 2

Find a comfortable place to draw with good lighting.

  3. Step 3

Use a model to work from. A photograph or drawing makes a good model.

  4. Step 4

Sketch the basic pose on your paper using light pencil strokes. Just try to capture the major lines of the figure at first.

  5. Step 5

Try several quick sketches to limber up and start seeing shape instead of object. When you have a shape you're happy with, you can start refining and adding detail.

  6. Step 6

Add details when you have a basic shape that you're pleased with. Work lightly in pencil so that you can erase lines that don't add to the drawing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep proportion in mind when drawing. The human body is mathematically proportioned. Learn the proportions and you'll find it much easier to draw realistic looking people.
  • If you're having trouble drawing a particular part of the body, isolate it. Use a page or two just drawing that body part over and over.
