Marriage is one of the biggest steps you will take over the course of your life. Before you can actually have the ceremony performed in Kansas, you will need to fulfill certain legal requirements. A marriage license is proof to anyone who performs the ceremony that you have fulfilled these requirements. You cannot get married in Kansas without one. Follow these steps to make the whole process easier.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Identification
  • Documentation relating to prior marriages
  • Cash

Step1
Determine your eligibility for marriage. There are certain age and time requirements for obtaining a marriage license in Kansas (see Tips below).
Step2
Gather your necessary documents. In Kansas, both parties will need a state-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, and your social security card.
Step3
Go to the County Clerk of the District Court in your county and bring your documentation. You can find the location of your local District Court by checking the phone book or get listings of County Clerks in Kansas online (see Resources below).
Step4
Pay your marriage licensing fee and present your documentation. In most counties in Kansas, this fee comes to a total of $75. Bring cash.
Step5
Wait 3 days. Kansas has a waiting period of 3 days between the time you receive your marriage license and the time the marriage ceremony is performed.
Step6
Now you can get married. This is what it is all about. Do not wait too long, though. A marriage license in Kansas is valid for 6 months after it is issued.

Tips & Warnings

  • In Kansas, you can get married as young as 15, although special requirements will need to be fulfilled. If you were previously married, you will need to know the date of your divorce or of the death of your spouse. You cannot get married within 30 days of a divorce. Kansas does not allow same-sex or cousin marriages.
  • Apply for your marriage license about a month before you plan to get married. This extra time will give you a cushion in case you run into problems at the clerk’s office.
